Greening of Hillocks and Social Forestry

Overview: The Andhra Pradesh government, with support from Swaniti, initiated an afforestation project on dry hillocks to address water scarcity and enhance green cover. Part of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), this project aims to improve water conservation, increase forest cover, and provide economic benefits to tribal populations.

Impact:
  1. Water Conservation: The project has improved the water table in nearby villages, ensuring better water availability for agricultural activities and reducing the dependency on monsoon rains.
  2. Increased Green Cover: The afforestation efforts have resulted in the planting of various tree species, enhancing the green cover and biodiversity in the region.
  3. Economic Benefits: The project has introduced market-oriented crops, providing small farmers with new income sources and improving their economic stability.

Swaniti’s Role: Swaniti played a crucial role in designing and implementing the afforestation project, focusing on community involvement and sustainable practices. By conducting field visits and focus group discussions, Swaniti ensured that the interventions were tailored to the needs of the local communities, thereby enhancing the project’s impact and sustainability.
